In M.R Merrick’s Release we delve into a much darker place, where life for Chase is constantly filled with danger, questions and mystery. The pace was a little slower than Shift, despite the array of action of amazing places that Merrick took Chase on. Through all of Chase’s journeys, it was impossible not to continue rooting for him and his band of merry warriors. The team he has around him are such an eclectic bunch, that they constantly entertained and amused me. I missed Rayna a little in Shift; I had become very fond of her kick-ass, no nonsense character in Shift that I felt a little bereft. However, I loved getting to know Vincent much better in Release. I couldn’t help but enjoy following his character. Merrick’s ability to create such a huge mix of characters, all with unique voices, pasts and personalities is impressive. I was completely blown away by Shift, book two in M.R Merrick's The Protector Series. The action and pace was superbly established and maintained and the characters that we had grown to love from book one, Exiled, were pushed and developed even further than I imagined possible. Chase's life in Shift doesn't seem to get any easier. He constantly finds himself in the middle of the battles and struggles of those around him. Merrick manages to successfully reestablish Chase's character and allows the reader to fully understand his thoughts and feelings by the first person narrative. This enables us to relate to this fascinating character so that we are actively cheering his successes and mourning his losses along side him. I am in awe at Merrick's ability to produce such a believable, yet complex character to life in the world of make believe that he creates.
