Winter Fae, by Melissa Turner Lee and Pauline Creeden,is an intriguing start to what's set to be a pretty impressive fantasy series. It only took about 45 mins or so to read and every step I was engaged. Winter Fae is very much a short prequel to the series and sets up an exciting background and lays the foundations to an interesting concept and very readable characters.  It was very enjoyable, and most definitely piqued my interest enough to read the next installment which I hope will be a full length novel. I didn’t see any real evidence of Steampunk within the novella and would describe Winter Fae as a fantasy read. Reviewer: Bex Rating: 5 out of 5 Fairies do love it when I pick up a book with little knowledge and therefore few expectations other than I hope I enjoy it, only to discover that I'm bowled over the characters and plot. I immediately enjoyed Mags' character, the protagonist. She is somewhat similar to other heroines of urban fantasy; feisty, ballsy, attractive and overall pretty bad-ass. I have no issues with this at all. That's one of the main reasons why I love female leads in this genre. What Olivia Martinez offers however, through the creation of her character, is a new type of supe. And a pretty cool one at that! Yet what is so beautifully unique about this book is the journey that the main character takes. The book opens very similar to a fairy-tale; it reads very much one like too. It successfully captures the innocence of the main character, 'Charlotte', and is so very enjoyable to read as Patrice McNeal and 'Charlotte' take us on a magical journey into the land of the fae. As the book progresses, we have a leap in time which is handled very smoothly - yay no whiplash - and is overall very well crafted. It is the fifteen year leap into the future where the real action takes place.
