Before long, the snow covered everything. Luckily, the demarcation of the road was still visible, but it was impossible to see details. Unfortunately, no one else was close by, so if anything were to happen...
For the first time since she embarked on this journey, she wondered if she had made the right decision by not waiting. But she had been so eager to leave, to finally get away from Whiskey River, that she didn’t think. And if she would have waited until spring, she feared that she never would have left.
Suddenly, the buggy lurched, sinking down sideways into the road, jerking to a complete stop, nearly dumping her out onto the road.
Heart racing, she looked up to assess the damage and realized the buggy was pulling down sideways on Butterscotch. Millie tried to steady the load before Butterscotch got hurt, but it was getting the best of her.
She draped the reins over the front bar and hurried down from the buggy. “Don’t worry, girl. I’ll have you loose in just a minute.”
She struggled a bit on the harness, but soon Butterscotch was free. Millie led her off the road and tied her reins to a tree.
“Now, don’t be getting any bright ideas about running off,” Millie instructed. “I know we don’t know each other yet, but I don’t intend to chase you all over kingdom come.”
Butterscotch nodded and whinnied as if she had understood every word.
“Oh, no, I won’t either,” Millie threw over her shoulder, traipsing through the snow back to the buggy.
Butterscotch bobbed her head in response.
Millie placed her hands on her hips. “Well, one thing’s for sure. We won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.” She motioned toward the buggy. “Not in this, anyway.”
All of a sudden, Millie heard the pounding of horse’s hooves, muffled against the snow-covered road, coming up fast from the Laramie side. Luckily, it sounded like only one rider.
Millie searched for a place to hide, but there wasn’t any. She could have darted behind a tree, but with Butterscotch there and the buggy, she’d look like an idiot who was just trying to hide. Knowing she had to face this head-on, she straightened the coat over her dress and just hoped that whoever was coming was respectable and a gentleman.
