I woke up in a sweat, my heart trotting in my chest. My nightmare was still vivid in my mind, terrifying images that stuck to my retinas and refused to be erased. I sat up in bed, mouth as dry and gritty as sand, and feeling a bit disoriented. Had I screamed, or had I imagined it?
“Nix, are you okay?” Joan’s voice came through the wooden door muffled but clearly worried. I must have screamed after all. “Let me in.”
I took a couple deep breaths, trying to slow down the beating of my heart and failing. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood up, noticing how wobbly my limbs were. It took me longer than it should have to get to the door and open it. Joan was standing there, gorgeous as ever in her printed pajamas and a worried frown. When my eyes met hers, a shiver of something I didn’t recognize ran over me. I couldn’t hold her gaze for long, so I stared at my feet.
“I heard you scream.” I may have not been able to see it, but I could feel it—her eyes burrowed holes in my heart.
“I had a nightmare,” I said, not daring to look up. “I’m fine. Go back to bed.”
Joan was silent for a moment, and I risked a glance. She was closer than I thought, so close I could touch her without having to stretch my arm. I wasn’t sure whether I really could feel her heat or if I was imagining it. She took another step closer, and I had a moment of insanity; I imagined taking her in my arms and kissing her. My mind reeled, confused by my recurring wish to kiss Joan; kissing was part of an unpleasant routine that I had no wish of participating in ever again. At the Fortress I stayed as invisible as I could, so Asmodeus would not call me to be part of one of his games.
“What’s wrong? You’ve been acting weird off and on since the island trip,” Joan said, taking yet another step forward. I instinctively matched her with a step backward. She flinched. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to invade your personal space. I’ll get out of your hair.”
The hurt in her voice moved something inside of me. Before she could leave, I held on to her arms and pulled her to me. “No, please don’t.” It was a plea for mercy. I had never encountered the kind of care and companionship she was willing to offer me. “I don’t want you out of my personal space.”

Natalina wrote her first romance at the age of thirteen. Since then she has published eleven romances that defy the boundaries of her genre. She enjoys writing all kinds of rebels and outcasts into her stories and she always roots for the underdog.

Natalina doesn’t believe you can have too many books or too much coffee. Art and dance make her happy and she is pretty sure she could survive on lobster and bananas alone. When she is not writing or stressing over lesson plans, she shares her life with her husband and two adult sons.
