Review: Crimson Vol 1 - Anthology

Reviewer: Stacey Rating: 4 out of 5 Fairies Crimson is a book with several short stories that leave you with the taste of blood on your lips and the need for more, as one bite isn't quite enough. If you like vampires, like me, then you will find this book "Blood Curdling Good!" Blood Trails - Sax Alexander When two people decide to meet on a blind date after meeting on a website...is it just luck that they are matched or is it something more? Was destiny the cause of their introduction and will this be the final bite? I loved this story...it was easy to follow and it kept me guessing...but I needed more. Daryn's Slayer - Leona Bushman A vampire who has been around for centuries and a slayer who is more than she seems! There is an attraction that overwhelms her, can she fight this or will she give in to his charm and his bite? Is it possible that a vampire and a slayer can have a happy ever after? This was a great short story. It had me on the edge ...

Review: Sunshine by Nikki Rae

Reviewer: Mykala Rating: 3 out of 5 Fairies I have a few favourite authors which I love to read, but when I get to start a book by someone new, I am always excited. From the synopsis, I couldn't wait to get started; it sounded right up my street: vampires, secrets and a budding romance, which for me always makes a great read. The cover is nice, but nothing new to what I would expect of a supernatural romance to be. Nikki Rae's book, Sunshine, is detailed but easy to read. It's more tamed than most books with less adult content than I am use to after reading Laurell H Hamilton and J R Ward which makes it a great book for a first time or young paranormal reader. I enjoyed getting to know the two main characters, Sophie and Myles, throughout the book. Past problems and heartache make you like Sophie more and more. You come to realise she is a strong young woman. While Myles helps Sophie come to turns with her past, I feel at 400 years old, he is still young, and I...

Review: Daughter of Night by Kelley Heckart

Reviewer: Stacey Rating: 4 out of 5 Fairies Daughter of Night is a fantastic tale depicting the story of a Vengeance Goddess sent by her master to find the whereabouts of Star Metal, a rare metal which is the only one in the world able to defeat the Gods. Arriving in Knossos posing as a slave, Becuille, the Vengeance Goddess, must find the precious metal and find and kill the only other person who knows of it's existence. But as Becuille begins her mission, she is welcomed into the Royal Family by all, and even falls for one of the Princes.  Can Becuille betray her new family? And how will the Royals react when they discover her true intentions?  Becuille battles through loneliness, love, betrayal and distrust and finds herself facing the worst feeling in the world- grief. Initially, this book was very hard to get into. With unusual names for everyone and everything, it started out as being a chore to read. Once you get used to the writing style though, the sto...

Review: Traffic Jam by Melissa Groeling

Reviewer: Charlee  Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Fairies Traffic Jam, by Melissa Groeling, is a heart-wrenching tale of a naive teenage girl, Val, making her way through the most difficult year of her life. Facing financial difficulty, her family are forced to move from their comfortable home to a small apartment in the city. I found the book was a bit slow and hard to get into in the first 60 pages, but when the pace picked up, I couldn't put it down. Following Val and her sister, Sam, through their problems and fallouts, you can't help but relate when their lives are almost ripped apart.  With Sam's life in danger and Val trying desperately to find out what's wrong with her sister, she struggles to save her from something so terrible that Val's life is threatened too. Helped by an unlikely source, can Val help Sam before it's too late? All in all, a lovely book. Although probably better suited to younger readers, I enjoyed it immensely.

Blog Tour Review & Giveaway: Arcadia Falls by Jennifer Malone Wright

Reviewer: Bex Rating: 4 out of 5 Fairies Love & War is an exciting read that allows fans (and new readers) to follow vampire hunter, Chloe's next journey. The main character Chloe, who I had previously established as being a favourite YA heroine of mine in The Vampire Hunter's Daughter, continues to develop in skill and maturity in Jennifer Malone Wright's book. The book is well crafted with an interesting plot development and twists that I really did not see coming. There are numerous exciting, heart-pounding moments in Love & War, that successfully entertained me and kept me gripped. It was a thoroughly enjoyable story, one that both new readers and hardy fans will enjoy.

Review: Remembering Zane by J.S. Wilsoncroft

Reviewer: Stacey Rating: 5 out of 5 Fairies J.S. Wilsoncroft's short story, Remembering Zane, made me want to jump into the story with the characters. From the moment I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down. I felt all of Bonnie's highs and lows. I just wished it had been a novel, rather than a short story. Bonnie met the love of her life at the age of ten. Zane was the apple of her eye, her everything, the man she was going to spend the rest of her life with, marriage and children...the perfect life. But all of a sudden Zane is killed in a tragic accident. Bonnie's feels like her life is over; she will never be able to replace him or fill the void in her heart. A face from the past, Zane's best friend Johnathon walks back into her life, but not the goofy braced faced boy she remembered; he is now a man and a hunk of a man. Holding a secret he has kept for fifteen years, Johnathon feels now is the time he should share. Will this secret help...

Tour Review: Infinity by Sedona Venez

Reviewer: Bex Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Fairies 'Infinity' proved to be a fast-paced, gripping paranormal read. I was immediately hooked in by the opening few chapters with the mystery surrounding Infinity's heritage and what this meant for her future. Her character starts off strong and full of diva attitude. Teamed with her entertaining sidekicks, I was immediately amused and entertained.

Review: The Orb of Truth - Brea Wycyoff

Reviewer: Stacey  Rating: 4 out of 5 Fairies Well...to be perfectly honest, this is not the kind of book I would pick up at the bookstore and choose to take home. But, after saying that I was very surprised! Brea Wycyoff captured me (in a bazaar way) with this fantasy with a magical twist. The characters range from Wizards, to Dragons, to Halflings and Dwarfs, and that's only mentioning a few! The book entices you and draws you into it's magical world and I lost myself in there a few times. There are times when you feel the heartache and the losses, and then in your next breath, you are on the edge of your seat lost in the action. The story as a whole is about two Ordiakains and a Dwarf who must embark on one hell of a journey, along with followers who become friends. My favourite character is Dulgin as he is just like me (I am not embarrassed to say so). He allows his mouth to run off without thinking; he will fight tooth and nail for his famil...

Review: Trapped by George A. Bernstein

Reviewer: Emily Rating: 4 out of 5 Fairies Trapped was one of the most heart wrenching books that I have ever read. It tells the story of a young woman that is left paralyzed after a surgical “mishap”. Jackee and her boys are in a terrible accident that left her face covered in scars. During facial reconstructive surgery, she becomes paralyzed. She is only able to blink her eyes, but she can understand everything that is going on. This is her story. We get to see inside her mind. A mind yearning for freedom from the prison of her useless body. Her story is moving and courageous but also extremely sad. Jackee is married to a sadistic man. He is happy that his wife was left completely unable to care for herself. Watching the way he treated her was chilling. There is a bit of a love story between Jackee and her therapist Kevin. To me, the romance was only a small part of the story. It was sweet but unnecessary. All we need was her story. The story of a woman comin...

Review: Fat Chances by JS Wilsoncroft

Reviewer: Stacey Rating: 4 out of 5 Fairies JS Wilsoncroft's short story, Fat Chances, was uplifting in a strange way, maybe because it was very true to life. Annie is on the plump side with no confidence and no self-esteem. She has a twin who looks exactly the same from the neck up, but from the neck down its a completely different story. She decides to take a Zumba class where she meets a super hot guy who apparently falls for her, but Annie has a hard time believing him. Annie has always been picked on for her weight, so has built up a wall to protect herself, will he be the one to break the wall and will Annie allow her wall to crumble to let him in? A best friend who loves Annie for who she is tells her to believe in him and herself. Will a love she could have be lost? And will she realise in time that big girls are beautiful? I give this book 4 fairy stars...I must say I was left feeling a bit depressed at the end and wanting more.

Review: Appetizers by Ivan Rusilko

Appetizers by Ivan Rusilko Bex's rating: 3 of 5 Fairies Appetizer’s, book one in Ivan Rusilko’s series is an enjoyable read. The romance is sweet, yet not overly heavy. It’s classified as erotica but it’s much more sexy romance, rather than hot and heavy. The characters are easy to follow and at times fascinating to read about. We discover a lot about the character Ivan in particular, though I didn’t feel as though I got a true sense of who Jaden was. The author only really scratches the surface with her character. Ivan is absolutely dreamy, although a little too perfect maybe to sit comfortably. The plot develops at a solid pace, and made me laugh and smile at times. It’s definitely as series I’ll be popping on my to-be-read list.

Review: Deceiving Destiny (#2 Bleeding Hearts) by Nadège Richards

Reviewer: Kay Rating: 5 out of 5 Fairies Deceiving Destiny is the second installment from The Bleeding Heart Trilogy. After reading Burning Bridges, I was left desperate for more, and Ms Richards did not disappoint. Deceiving Destiny picks up right where Burning Bridges left off, and the transition is seamless. There's nothing worse than a sequel that spends half the book going over something I already know, and thankfully Ms Richards spares us this tiresome task. Almost instantly, I was immersed back in the lives and the journey of Echo and Ayden who are not just fighting for their own lives but for that of their friends and families. Echo has now grown into the role of princess, although she does not see herself that way, but she has accepted that others do. Echo is stronger than when we first met her. The people now look to her as a source of reassurance and guidance, and she lives up to this. I really wanted to see how the romantic relationship between Echo and Ay...

Review: Demon Apocalypse (#3 Oceans of Red) by Willow Cross

Oceans of Red Volume Three- Demon Apocalypse by Willow Cross Bex's rating: 5 of 5 Fairies   Remy totally won me over in Willow Cross's latest installment of Oceans of Red. Part one was fabulous - 5 stars, book two was a solid 4, but by far book three is my favourite to date. I love the way Remy's character is developing and advancing. She seems finally at grips with her mission and new powers so much so that she is easy admire and follow. Willow Cross has truly mastered this installment. She successfully weaved and developed both the plot and the characters in such a way that leaves so much possibility for this series. I have so many predictions running around in my head. I just hope that with some of them I am wrong. The inclusion of Ryan is fabulous. I really enjoyed his down to earth character and his no-nonsense attitude. The dynamics between Remy and him are superb to read. I laughed out loud at their very 'normal' antics and often found myself w...

Review: Rescued by the Rancher by Soraya Lane

Rescued by the Rancher by Soraya Lane My rating: 3 of 5 stars Reviewer: Bex Rescued by the Rancher is a sweet contemporary romance. The main characters, Jake and Faith, are likeable characters who are fun to follow. The storyline was uncomplicated and didn't push forward any of the driving complications. While this was a pity, as there was great potential, it was a nice and easy read. The story pushed ahead quickly with everything falling into place very neatly. The description at times was lacking, but the author gave us just enough to like the characters and want to cheer for them.

Review: Croak by Gina Damico

Reviewer: Justine Rating: 4.5 out of 5 fairies Croak by Gina Damico was so much more than I expected! Gina Damico grants us a hilarious and extremely witty read. Even though I was dying of laughter (pun intended), Gina still managed to endear me to the story as a whole, so much so that I had tears of sadness flowing just as hard. The author creates a well thought out paranormal world, down to the smallest details. It was a completely different reaper story than any I have come across before. Though I hate to see it end, all good things must. Gina Damico once again did not disappoint, giving a feeling of completion and a look at what was to come for our friends from Croak. Justine

Review: Leashed by Zoe Dawson

Leashed by Zoe Dawson Bex's rating: 4 of 5 stars Unleashed was a fast and fun read. The author provides just enough backstory to her characters for the reader to get a clear sense of what drives them. This enables the reader to happily follow the characters Callie and Owen. The plot has the lovely of addition of dogs which adds lovely quirky humour to the mix. While the storyline is not overly original, it was a fun, romantic read. It left me smiling and happy that I'd taken the time to give Leashed a read.

Wicked, Long Birthday Weekend Celebration!

It's official - we're ONE today! To think a whole year has gone by from when we first opened our blog and Facebook page. We've have grown and evolved so much. Starting on my lonesome, after being inspired by Stephanie Rowe's amazing Order of the Blade series, I felt compelled to celebrate authors and to share their amazing work with you.  With this as my mission, Bex 'n' Books was born. After a couple of months by myself, review requests coming out of my ears and a growing fanbase, I stalked the amazing Kay G and Tlani in helping out both admining and reviewing for Bex 'n' Books. While Tlani went to pastures new, Kay, for her sins, stuck around and is still with us today. ( Thank you, my beautiful friend .) She is such a wonderful person, and actually a high school friend of mine. Not sure if anyone knew that! Not long after, I discovered a wonderful talented designer and writer, the gorgeous Danny Rei, of Art is Life . Danny ...

Review: The Vampire Hunter's Daughter: Complete Collection by Jennifer Malone Wright

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars Reviewer: Bex I'd read VHD part one a while back, but re-read alongside the rest of this whole wonderful collection. The 'parts' simply go from strength to strength and completely work as a whole read. I much preferred it this way. The author, Jennifer Malone Wright, captures Chloe's character beautifully. She's a character that I believed in and had empathy for. Her character development alongside her character's journey is well crafted and finely tuned to create a strong female protagonist.
