Review: Afterlife (The Dark Gifts) by Willow Cross

Goodreads Synopsis Two hundred years before the battle of the fortress, a young man named William Townsend had to die. William had big plans. He would become a valiant soldier, fall in love, have a family, and die. In fact, he was certain it would happen in that exact order. But fate is a fickle taskmaster and things almost never go as planned. And sometimes, just sometimes, your true destiny will greet you after life. From the first page of ‘Afterlife’, I laughed out loud “...Balls!...”. This immediately impressed me and gave me that warm fuzzy feeling; the one that tells me that I won’t be disappointed. And hurray, I wasn’t in the slightest. ‘Afterlife’ is a ‘Dark Gifts Series Companion’ short. And as such, it lays out the background and history of a few of the characters that we meet in the novels ‘Birthright’ and ‘Inheritance’ (the latter of which I’m yet to read). Since I have read Birthright, my eyes lit up in joy at the backstories that run through ‘Afterlife’. ...

Review: Death's Hand (Descent #1) by S.M. Reine

Goodreads Synopsis Policing relations between Heaven, Hell, and Earth is messy and violent, but Elise Kavanagh and James Faulkner excelled at it-- until coming across a job so brutal that even they couldn't stand to see one more dead body. Now they've been pretending to be normal for five years, leaving their horrific history a dark secret. Elise works in an office. James owns a business. None of their friends realize they used to be one of the world's best killing teams. After years of hiding, something stirs. Bodies are vanishing. Demons scurry in the shadows of the night. A child has been possessed. Some enemies aren't willing to let the secrets of the past stay dead... It was so very refreshing to read a novel with a strong female protagonist, one that wasn't bogged down by romance. Don't get me wrong, there's an element of romance in Death's Hand, but it didn't drive the story which I really liked. There are several twists in the plo...

Look out for: Small Medium at Large by Joanne Levy

Goodreads Synopsis Small Medium at Large by Joanne Levy After she’s hit by lightning at a wedding, twelve-year-old Lilah Bloom develops a new talent: she can hear dead people. Among them, there’s her overopinionated Bubby Dora; a prissy fashion designer; and an approval-seeking clown who livens up a séance. With Bubby Dora leading the way, these and other sweetly imperfect ghosts haunt Lilah through seventh grade, and help her face her one big fear: talking to—and possibly going to the seventh-grade dance with—her crush, Andrew Finkel. Joanne Levy’s love of books began at a very early age. Being the youngest and the only female among four children, she was often left to her own devices and could frequently be found sitting in a quiet corner with her nose in a book. A little bit about Joanne Levy After much teenage misadventure, Joanne eventually graduated from university and now spends her weekdays as an executive assistant at one of Canada’s big banks planning meetings a...

Can Shade overcome her fears and accept the dark fallen hero? Shade's Loss is a thoroughly enjoyable read with lots of fast-paced action, sweet, tender moments and several twists and turns. From the moment the book opened, I immediately knew I'd like this book. Kristi Worrell ...

Review: Touch (Hereafter) by Jennifer Snyder

Goodreads Synopsis Seventeen-year-old Rowan Harper knows her life is forever changed the moment her schizophrenic mother commits suicide. What Rowan doesn’t realize is how much her mother’s choice altered her own fate. It’s not until after meeting Jet, a sapphire-eyed dead boy, Rowan begins to learn of her new destiny as becoming her mother’s replacement for something she never knew existed. Touch is a novella of approx. 18,115 words. I really enjoyed this and was disappointed that it just didn't keep going! I knew it was a novella, but I just wanted more from the characters and especially wanted to know what happens next! The main character Raven is young though she is certainly not naive considering the hardships that she's already faced in her 17 years. What Jennifer Snyder has successfully created Touch is a character that I want to follow, one that I truly want to see being happy and desperately want to know more about. This always amazes me when a novella can...
