Giveaway & Author Interview: J.L McCoy

We're officially half way there! Week 5 of our 10 week AUTHOR OF THE WEEK FEATURE, and we have the lovely, and very talented J.L McCoy joining us.  On Sunday, I hope you got chance to read our very positive 4 star review of Blood of the Son, book one in J.L's Skye Morrison Series. It really is a cracker of a book; it has a strong combination of the elements of an Adult Paranormal read that I really enjoy.

In celebration of J.L, who is such a kind and beautiful person, I have the pleasure of presenting her interview. Please read on to discover a little bit more about this marvelous author. Bex

1.     Tell me a bit about yourself.

Well, my first name is Jennifer and I grew up in the suburbs outside of south-west Houston, Texas.  I moved around a lot as a teenager before finally settling down in Austin, Texas when I was 19.  I absolutely love the city of Austin and the people in it!  I’ve been happily married to an amazing guy for 6 years.  When I’m not writing I like to watch movies, sing karaoke, hang out with friends and family, travel, and of course read.  I love body art and have 17 tattoos so far and 7 piercings.

2.     What inspired you to write your first book?

My mother actually inspired me.  Her and my grandmother had been telling me for years that I should sit down and write a book.  I had never written anything before, other than essays and reports for school.  My mother started writing her first novel in March of 2011 and encouraged me to do the same, so I did.

  3.     How did you come up with the name Skye Morrison?

One of my favourite movies of all time is Say Anything starring John Cusack and Ione Skye.  I’ve always loved her name and the name Skye.  I played around with using the name Skylar for a while, but I never really warmed up to it, so I just stuck with Skye.   Morrison comes from Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors.  I was a massive fan of The Doors as a teenager.

 4.     How are you the same/different from your main character?

Skye and I are very much alike personality wise.  We are feisty, loyal, and sweet.  We are different in the fact that I’ve never been a waitress/bartender, I didn’t go to university, and if I did, I definitely wouldn’t have chosen her major, I’m not a big drinker, and I’m not the least bit athletic.

5.     Describe Skye in five words.

Sweet, Strong, Capable, Feisty, and Loyal

6.     What do you have in store for your main character Skye?

Skye’s world is about to be completely turned upside down.  Book 3 and Book 4 are going to be huge turning points for her life.

7.     What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Well, first and foremost, that I could even write a book.  I’ve never done something like that before.  I’m not like a lot of the authors out there that have been writing stories since their childhood.  My dream wasn’t to be an author.  I started my first book, Blood of the Son, when I was 30 and self-published it at 31.  I was surprised to learn that I loved writing, though.  I absolutely love creating Skye’s world.

8.     Jameson & Archer, are pretty tasty characters. What’s your type of man candy?

I like a guy who is strong, considerate, and manly.  I’ve always been attracted to the ‘bad boys’, though.  Give me long hair, ripped jeans, tattoos, and muscles and I just swoon.

9.     Have you ever done anything strange or weird in the name of research?

I had to watch a lot of youtube videos to see how people dance and dress these days in goth/industrial clubs.  And let me just say, it’s NOTHING like it used to be.  In doing my research I came across a lot of stuff I had never seen before.  (For example: Cyber Goths…weird!)  I spent a few hours absorbing a lot of these new trends and ultimately decided that I liked the old way better.  Lol!

10. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I wake up, work, and sleep.  I tend to completely immerse myself in whatever I’m writing until it’s finished.  I try to make time in the evenings and on the weekends for family, my husband, and hobbies, but I pretty much work constantly.

11. Do you have any writing rituals?

I wouldn’t call it a ritual, but I always have to have ice when I write.  I munch on ice and it helps me think.

12. What book are you reading now?

I’m actually in-between books right now, but I just finished Bridesmaid Lotto by Rachel Astor.  It was a Kindle freebie and not half bad.  ;)

13. What new author has grasped your interest?
I absolutely dig Dicey Grenor.  She has an awesome adult series out right now that follows the life of a female narcoleptic vampire.  I really like her writing style and humor.  Be sure to check out the first book in her series, Sleepy Willow’s Bonded Soul.

14. Do you have any advice for other writers?

Don’t give up.  If you love it, do it.  Not everyone is going to like what you write, so be prepared for that.  Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.  Take chances and apologize for nothing.

15. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you for letting me entertain you with my books and thank you for your support.  It’s not easy being an independent author.  Your word of mouth recommendations, reviews, and social networking shares really make a difference.  I wouldn’t be able to get the word out about my books without you guys.  The outpouring of support you’ve given me this past year has been absolutely incredible.  I just adore you guys!  So thank you from the bottom of my heart!
